The menu is a true reflection of New Mexican cuisine, with a focus on bold, smoky, and spicy flavors. It's a dish that's both comforting and exciting, a perfect representation of what New Mexican cooking is all about. For those who prefer something a bit milder, the sopapillas stuffed with seasoned beef or chicken offer a satisfying option, with the doughy exterior and savory filling making each bite a delight.

Pair it with a side of refried beans and Spanish rice, and you have a meal that truly captures the essence of the region.

Abuelita’s also shines when it comes to its breakfast offerings. If you find yourself there in the morning, don’t miss out on the huevos rancheros. Abuelita’s, a beloved local restaurant in Bernalillo, has been a part of the town's dining scene for over 42 years. This establishment has been owned and operated by three generations of the same family, beginning with the Romero family, and is currently run by Kevin and Ruby Lasoya. Family photos decorating the walls adds to the restaurant's charm. During my visit, Ruby's evident pride in the restaurant was clear, and I observed her warmly greeting locals by their first names and inquiring about their families. This speaks volumes about the restaurant's strong ties to the community and its loyal local patronage. For my meal, I chose the Enchiladas Abuelita’s with red chile, accompanied by mashed beans, Spanish rice, and a fresh sopaipilla with honey. I also ordered a side of chips and salsa. The chips were notably good and, like everything on my plate, appeared to be homemade. While the red chile was on the milder side, it was flavorful, though the chicken was a bit stringy. The standout component of the dish was undoubtedly the perfectly prepared Spanish rice. To conclude the meal, Ruby graciously offered all customers a complimentary dessert of homemade custard. This custard, reminiscent of a French crème anglaise with a hint of cinnamon, was divine. Overall, Abuelita’s is a wonderful and popular local spot, cherished by residents, and embodies the charm of a small town. It's definitely a place worth trying if you find yourself in the area.

My dad and I were in town visiting from out of state and I was craving authentic Mexican food and Abuelita’s hit the spot just right!!! It was absolutely delicious I had the Tamale plate with Christmas chile(red&green) and wow soo soo good! You can taste the fresh taste and I will say if you cannot handle spicy food maybe try the Cheese Quesadillas because I had those for my daughter and those were delicious as well!!! Highly recommend stopping here!! They are open Mon-Fri 8-3pm

For an exceptional dining experience in Bernalillo, Abuelitas is highly recommended. The establishment offers authentic cuisine where the chile is notably flavorful, possessing a satisfying level of spice. My recent visit with my husband included sampling the combination plate, which featured a tamale, enchilada, and taco. This selection proved to be immensely satisfying, evoking the comforting quality of a homestyle meal reminiscent of dining at one's grandmother's house. The depth of flavor and careful preparation underscore the authenticity of their offerings. Furthermore, the entire staff contributes to a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. Their attentive and friendly service enhances the overall dining pleasure. It is a culinary destination that warrants a visit by anyone seeking delicious and genuine New Mexican fare.

Abuelitas Tacopilla delicious! Chicken navajo Taco devine! The calabacitas remind me of my mother's. We had to finish it off with sopapillas, we liked it with the Natillas and honey on them. Green chile was my favorite over the red, but it may contain a little more heat for some people. Was able to park truck and travel trailer across the street. Beautiful clean restaurant and restrooms. Excellent friendly service!

Abuelitas is an iconic, authentic, family owned restaurant, the one in Bernalillo is our family stop for over 30+ years. My mother knows them personally because of our years and years of eating family meals there, I have so many wonderful memories. The food is like Mom's home cooking, and the Chile never disappoints you, it's hot and delicious, that NM roasted savory hot green is a must, but can't live without the tasty red. My to go to is Huevos Rancheros X-mas, eggs over easy, and a puffy Sopapilla with honey to tone down the and a side if those crispy fresh papitas. Thank you Abuelitas for your amazing food, see you this weekend!!

After living a year in NM and driving by Abuelita's a lot, we finally took the leap and stopped by. I'm very happy we did. We had the red menudo, and it was delicious. A tad on the spicy side, but we didn't mind. We also had the Spanish omelet, and it was great. We inquired about what where Natilla's and they so Graciously gifted us a tad to try and wow so so delicious. We had never heard of Natilla.

Outstanding New Mexican food. Everything was piping hot and super delicious. The carne burrito with red chilli sauce was very tasty. The beef taco was nice. The outstanding item was the chili rellenos. Done to perfection with spicy hot hatch chilis, these are the best I have ever had. Don't miss. Finally, the green chili stew was really good too. You won't go wrong here and the service was very friendly. Highly recommended.
